HISTORY
Historians say that the name 'Nooranad' originated from the confluence of a hundred small regions ('Nooru Nadukal') in ancient times. Originally under the rule of the King of Kayamkulam, this area later became a part of Travancore when King Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma annexed it. Furthermore, Nooranad has deep historical links with Buddhist culture.
Local administration was managed through Chaukis in earlier times. Official Formation: Nooranad transitioned into the present system of Panchayat administration after the implementation of the Travancore-Cochin Village Panchayat Act in the 1950s. (This panchayat is located in Mavelikara Taluk, Alappuzha District). Bifurcation: Originally sprawling over a large area, Nooranad Panchayat was later divided for administrative convenience, carving out Palamel Grama Panchayat.
In post-independence Kerala, democratically elected governing bodies spearheaded the development of the panchayat. Prominent political and social leaders have served as Panchayat Presidents across different eras. From operating with minimal facilities as a Village Office/Panchayat establishment, it has grown today into a modern Grama Panchayat Office building based in Padanilam, Nooranad.
When discussing the history of Nooranad Grama Panchayat, one cannot overlook the famous Padanilam Parabrahma Temple and its iconic Shivarathri Kettukazhcha festival. Uniting people regardless of caste or religion, this area was historically a 'Padanilam' (Battlefield) where the soldiers of the King of Kayamkulam performed military drills.
