Panchayat

A Panchayat is a body of elected representatives of the people to administer the affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. In the case of a Gram Panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of a Panchayat are:President: He is the head of the Panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat.Vice President: He assumes the duties in the absence of the President.Ward Members: Representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat.Standing Committees: Committees formed to facilitate the decision-making of the Panchayat, such as finance, development, welfare, health, education etc.

History of Grama Panchayat

Historically a part of the Kollam district, Nooranad derived its name from the 'Nooranad Sub-district,' a revenue division established in 1078 M.E. (Kollam Era) by integrating one hundred (Nooru) revenue regions (Karas). Home to one of the earliest Anchal offices (post offices) and sub-registrar offices, this historically significant region became a part of the Mavelikara taluk in Alappuzha district when the latter was formed on August 17, 1957. The area is famously known as 'Padanilam' (battlefield) because it served as a military outpost for the King of Kayamkulam and was the site of fierce territorial feuds among local clans for ownership of the Padanilam Parabrahma Temple, which originated as a simple stone shrine under a banyan tree.
